Like his fellow McLaren tester Pedro De La Rosa, Wurz has also had an on-off career, spanning from the 1997 season to the present day.
His career began at Benetton in 1997, when he replaced the injured Gerhard Berger. He was moderately successful, consistantly scoring points. When Berger chose to retire at the end of the season Wurz was given a full time drive alongside Giancarlo Fisichella.
The Italian outpaced the Austrian in the whole time they spent together at Benetton. In 1998, 1999 and 2000 Wurz failed to get on the podium, although he scored points on a regular basis in '98 and '00. However Fisichella was able to continuously score podiums in 1998, leading to Wurz quickly becoming the teams number two. Both drivers struggled in 1999 as the car lacked speed. 2000 was Wurz's last season for Benetton as the team were bought out by Renault.
Wurz chose to follow Olivier Panis the year before and became a test driver for McLaren. But unlike Panis Wurz spent longer trying to find a race seat. He was recently subject to much speculation that he could join Jaguar, but the deal fell through. He has remained a loyal test driver and made his first appearance for McLaren in San Marino this year, where he inherited a podium due to the BARs disqualification.
