Australian Grand Prix - 2007

Date:March 18th 2007

Weather:

Circuit:Albert Park Circuit Australia

Distance:307.574 Km (58 laps x 5.303 Km)

The free practice sessions of the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park? were the first opportunities for the eleven Formula 1 teams to test their cars in a competitive environment. Ferrari, who had shown speed all winter, led the timesheets with Felipe Massa, with McLaren and BMW Sauber following.

Qualifying, which was using the same format as in 2006, looked set to produce an all-Ferrari front row. In the first session the Spykers, Toro Rossos, David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello in the Honda were eliminated.

The second session saw a major surprise, with pre-race favourite Massa having gearbox trouble after bouncing violent across the kerbs. Jenson Button was also eliminated in an embarrassing afternoon for Honda. Kimi Raikkonen took pole with ease, perhaps too much ease in fact, as rumours arose he was fuelled lighter than those around him. Fernando Alonso took second, with Nick Heidfield third and Lewis Hamilton fourth on his debut. Qualifying confirmed pre-season expectations, with Ferrari, McLaren and BMW taking the top five places on the grid.
