Franck Montagny is a fast but underrated Frenchman who has never had the chance to prove himself at the top level.
The one-time Nissan World Series champion has tested for Renault since 2002 however has yet to start a Formula 1 race.
The Frenchman made his first appearance as Renault's Friday driver at his home Grand Prix in 2002. However from then on it was Allan McNish who did the team's Friday duties. In 2003 the rules changed and Renault were no longer allowed to use a third car on Fridays.
Renault boss Flavio Briatore was keen on giving Montagny more experience, so he was loaned out to Jordan for the French Grand Prix in 2005, where he once again drove on Friday, outpacing the team's regular race drivers in his first drive in the car. Many thought the Frenchman had a chance of a race drive with the team, rumours which were quickly denied.
Montagny may not have long to wait for a race drive. Briatore wants his man in Formula 1 and Bernie Ecclestone wants a Frenchman in the sport. The signs are certainly good.
