History:
1974 - Makes karting debut, aged 10.
1978 - Winner of British Junior Karting Championship
1979 - Winner of British Senior 135cc Karting Championship.
1982 - Winner of British Senior 135cc Karting Championship. Eighteenth place in the Karting World Championship held in Kalmar, Sweden.
1983 - Makes Formula Ford debut.
1984 - Formula Ford 1600 - Won race at Silverstone and took pole at Mallory Park.
1985 - Formula Ford 1600 - Won race at Brands Hatch and took pole at Silverstone, Thruxton and Brands Hatch. Winner of Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch.
1986 - Formula Ford 2000. Made British Formula 3 debut at Donington Park, finishing fourth.
1987 - Winner of British Formula 3 Championship. Winner of Formula 3 Super Prix at Brands Hatch. Winner of the Autosport award for National Racing Driver of the Year. Had first taste of Formula One during a test for Benetton.
1988 - F3000 - won first race in Jerez. On 21st August, Johnny was badly injured in a crash at Brands Hatch. By December he was able to take part in a test for Benetton at Silverstone.
1989 - Formula One - Benetton. Number of races entered: 6 (DNQ in Canada) Team-mate: Alessandro Nannini Best results: 4th Place at the Brazilian Grand Prix, Johnny's first F1 race. Points: 5 Championship position: 14th Also entered two races for Tyrrell (Spa and Estoril. DNQ in Estoril). Team-mate Jonathan Palmer.
1990 - Formula One - Lotus (Test & Reserve Driver). Number of races entered: 2 (replaced the injured Martin Donnelly at last two races) Team-mate: Derek Warwick. Entered Le Mans 24 Hours, driving for Mazda. Entered five races in All-Japan Prototype Sports Car Championship.
1991 - Formula One - Lotus. Number of races entered: 8 Best results: 7th Place at the Belgian Grand Prix. Team-mate: Mika Hakkinen. Entered two races in All-Japan Prototype Sports Car Championship. WINNER of Le Mans 24 Hours. Driving for Mazda with Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot.
1992 - Formula One - Lotus. Number of races entered: 16 - Full season Team-mate: Mika Hakkinen Best results: 6th Place at the South African and French Grands Prix Points: 2 Championship position: 14th.
1993 - Formula One - Lotus. Number of races entered: 16 - Full season Team-mates: Pedro Lamy & Alex Zanardi Best results: 4th Place at the British, European and Brazilian Grands Prix Points: 11 Championship.
1994 - Formula One - Lotus (Brazil to Portugal). Number of races entered: 13 Team-mates: Zanardi, Lamy, Adams, Bernard, Salo Best results: 7th Place at the French, Pacific and Brazilian Grands Prix. Formula One - Ligier (Europe). Number of races entered: 1 (finished in 8th place) Team-mate: Olivier Panis.Formula One - Benetton (Japan & Australia). Number of races entered: 2 Team-mate: Michael Schumacher.
1995 - Formula One - Benetton. Number of races entered: 17 - Full season Team-mate: Michael Schumacher Best results: winner of British and Italian Grands Prix Points: 45 Championship position: 4th
1996 - Formula One - Sauber. Number of races entered: 16 - Full season Team-mate: Heinz-Harald Frentzen Best result: 3rd place at the Monaco Grand Prix Points: 4 Championship position: 14th.
1997 - Formula One - Sauber. Number of races entered: 17 - Full season Team-mates: Larini, Fontana & Morbidelli Best result: 3rd place at the Hungarian Grand Prix Points: 15 Championship position: 10th.
1998 - Formula One - Sauber. Number of races entered: 16 - Full season Team-mate: Jean Alesi Best result: 6th place at the Australian Grand Prix Points: 1 Championship position: 15th.
