Despite being born in Stockholm, Sweden, Keijo Erik Rosberg became the first Finnish driver to race in Formula 1, debuting in 1978 with the Theodore team. Incredibly, he won at his second time out, a non-championship race at Brands Hatch. The result was made particularly more special by the fact that most of the major players had spun out during torrential rain. He couldn't even qualify for Theodore after that, and was signed by ATS for three races. He then moved back to Theodore, before going back once again to ATS.
1979, 1980 and 1981 were bad years for Keke. He started mid-season at Wolf in '79, although poor reliability let the team down. For 1980 he joined Fittipaldi and had his first two points scores in his career, but thereafter struggled to even qualify the underpowered car. He stayed there in 1981 but once again failed to score points.
Finally 1982 brought about some luck for Rosberg. He moved to the Williams team, at the time one of the best in the field. Keke scored points in most races and took his first win at Dijon. Keke won the title, despite only winning that one race in France. However consistancy won through, with no-one else taking more than two wins. Championship favourite Didier Pironi missed most of the season through injury, and the other challengers suffered reliability problems and accidents. However three disappointing years followed, and Keke unsurprisingly chose to leave the team to join McLaren.
It had seemed like a good option. His new team had won the previous two titles with Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. Unfortunately for the Finn the Honda engine he had helped develop in 1984 and 1985 came good in 1986, with Mansell and Piquet becoming the men to beat. Rosberg was soundly beaten by Alain Prost, and he chose to retire at the end of 1986, after just one season at McLaren. Later Rosberg would admit that the retired from Formula 1 too early.
