LIIIo Gran Premio d' Italia - 1982
Monza is of course traditional Ferrari country so it is perhaps fitting that the red cars made the early headlines as the teams assembled for the 53rd Italian Grand Prix. After the disappointment of Tambay's non-participation at Dijon Enzo Ferrari was taking no chances of failing in front of the home crowd and managed to secure the services of Mario Andretti - unusually free from any CART commitments. As a result for the 1st time since Pironi's dreadful accident at Hockenheim 2 Ferraris would take to the track.
Ferrari stayed in the news with qualifying when Andretti - always popular with the tifosi - grabbed pole ahead of the Brabham of Piquet.
When the race got underway Andretti fluffed the start and found himself beaten to the 1st chicane by Piquet, Tambay and Arnoux. Prost nearly got through as well but was forced to run wide and spend a few moments gathering his wheels back under him. Piquet's lead was very short lived however and no sooner had he left the 1st chicane that he found his clutch slipping. As a result he was quickly swallowed up by the Tambay as the leaders approached Curva Parabolica.
Arnoux followed the Ferrari and as they crossed the start-finish line he was edging ahead of Tambay. Up at the front it didn't change much for the rest of the race. Arnoux finished just ahead of Tambay who managed to build a strong lead over his team mate who came home in 3rd.
