Marc Gene made his first F1 appearance for Minardi in 1999, and his last for Williams in 2004. A big difference.
Gene's first full season yielded an unlikely point, but one which was definetely deserved. As all the championship contenders fell by the wayside, Gene found himself sixth, on course for a point. Having had to let Hakkinen past earlier the Spaniard held off Eddie Irvine to clinch the final point.
Minardi retained Gene for 2000, but they couldn't repeat their points score. Gene had a much less impressive team mate, Gaston Mazzacane, and blitzed the Argentine rookie. However his Formula 1 career looked over.
For 2001 he took a Williams test role, and remained there until the end of 2004. He has started races for the team, on both occasions replacing the injured Ralf Schumacher. In Monza 2003 he took home fifth place, however a year later he struggled and lost the replacement driver tag to Antonio Pizzonia.
Gene left at the end of the season to become Ferrari's test driver alongside ex-Minardi team-mate Luca Badoer. However as yet Gene has failed to receive the chance he got at Williams, and has yet to race for the Scuderia.
