When Nicolas Kiesa stepped into a Minardi at Hockenheim in 2003 he became only the fourth Dane to compete in Formula 1, and the first since 1998.
It began when Justin Wilson left the team to join Jaguar, freeing up a place alongside Jos Verstappen. Team boss Paul Stoddart chose the young Dane, winner of the Monaco F3000 race earlier in the year.
Indeed, that race had one of the strangest endings in motorsport history. Race leader Sebastian Bourdais slowed 20 metres before the line, thinking he'd already crossed it. Kiesa blasted past to win before the Frenchman knew what had hit him.
Anyway, back to Formula 1. Kiesa's five 2003 races were solid, but not enough for him to retain his seat. His career looked over until a Friday test spot became available at Jordan in Germany. For the last two races Kiesa has driven on Fridays, setting times rivalling the team's regular drivers.
And with Midland keeping their driver options open, you wouldn't bet against Kiesa being a contender.
