| History: | | 1977 - | Renault debuts in formula1 after FOCA gives permission for the team to enter in the middle of the season. Competed in five Grands Prix with Jean Pierre Jabouille. No points scored. | | 1978 - | Missed first two races. Best result was fourth in the US Grand Prix. | | 1979 - | At a disadvantage following the introduction of ground effects and a ruling that all teams must field two cars. Raced at the first four events with the old RS01, and introduced the new RS10 in time for the Spanish GP. Hired RenŽ Arnoux to pilot their second contender. Took a win at their home French race and finished sixth overall in the Constructor`s championship. | | 1980 - | Renault firmly establishes itself as a title contender, taking a handful of wins along the way. | | 1982 - | Hire Alain Prost to drive for the team. | | 1983 - | Prost takes four wins and finishes second in the constructor`s championship. | | 1984 - | Lose their star driver to McLaren and finish fifth in the Constructor`s championship. | | 1985 - | Finish seventh in the team standings and withdraw as a full manufacturer from formula1, but supply engines to Lotus. | | 1986 - | Continued supplying engines to Lotus but decide to withdraw altogether at the end of the year. | | 1989 - | Renault return as an engine supplier, this time to Williams. Their success in this field continues and they take five constructors championships with the Grove-based team (1992-1994; 1996; 1997) and one with Benetton in 1995. | | 1996 - | Renault decides to leave the sport at the end of the season once again. However they begin negotiations to buy-out an existing team in 1999. | | 2000 - | Benetton announce that they have been bought out by Renault and will contest only one more season under its name. | | 2001 - | Renault effectively takes over Benetton, supplying their own engine to the team and putting their own management staff in place. The outfit finishes seventh in its final year to be known under the name Benetton, with the full-blown Renault outfit to begin competing from 2002. |
