The United States's brightest hope for having a driver in F1. Scott Speed has impressed in the 2005 GP2 series and has been given the opportunity to be a friday driver in Canada and the United States for Red Bull.
A product of the Red Bull Driver Search program, Speed has drawn the interest of American F1 fans, especially due to his more than appropriate name. Speed hopes to land a full-time F1 ride for 2006, but a more realistic estimate is 2007. The United States haven't had a Formula One driver since Michael Andretti's failed attempt with McLaren in 1993 and Scott Speed is leading a new generation of young American open-wheel racers that includes names like Danica Patrick, AJ Allmendinger, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Sam Hornish Jr. The potential for an American F1 driver is endless, the problem is generating the interest for these young drivers.
With Red Bull's takeover of the Minardi team ahead of 2006, Speed's inclusion on the grid is all but guaranteed. With Red Bull now occupying four Formula 1 seats, surely one of them will belong to their young protege.
