The race was dominated by the BRM team with Hill and Ginther posting the team's first ever 1-2 result. Pole sitter Clark was an early casualty with gearbox and electrical problems while Surtees and McLaren were the best of the rest. Surtees had been on track to finish 2nd until his Climax engine threw a piston just before the half way stage. Ireland, another potential challenger was also forced into retirement by engine problems, while Bonnier was the best of the Porsches, finishing in 6th place. Ferrari, missing from several races as a result of a strike by the Italian metal industry, and the realisation that their cars were no longer invincible, were back in force. Mairesse and Baghetti both scored points while Bandini and Phil Hill made a fight of it with the middle runners.
