Good topic, good posts. But in the poll it is very hard to choose when their are so many drivers not mentioned like Szisz, Renault, Ascari, Lang, Wimille, Stuck, Varzi and my personal favourite Nazzaro. I personally rate Nazzaro higher than Caracciola, Nuvolari and Rosemeyer.
Maybe it is interesting to read what is said in another thread about this topic on our forum.

True. However I don't think Lang, Stuck and Varzi were better than the three mentioned and I also don't know enough of the other drivers to offer a decent profile. I also didn't want the poll to be distracted by too many options and rather decided to concentrate on the Golden Era of Motorracing and their best protagonists.

I'ts funny that for us that are so far away from that Golden Age, it's easy to say and state that these were the 3 best drivers. I tend to agree that Nuvolari, Caracciola and Rosemeyer are perhaps the greatest 3. But if we take a closer look and read a little about those races in those days, it's easy to see that we can easily disagree.
Fernand Charron, Felice Nazzaro, Georges Boillot, Antonio Ascari and Achille Varzi (just to mention some) are easily up to those 3 fabulous drivers.

I read a lot of stories about the golden era. And almost in every place they said that Varzi was good but not as good as Caracciola, Nuvolari or Rosemeyer. Maybe it's a similar question like arguing whether Mansell was as good as Prost, Senna or Piquet?

We are talking about the AIACR European Championships 1935-1939.
Fernand Charron died in 1928, Felice Nazzaro quit racing in 1925, Georges Boillot died in 1916 and Antonio Ascari died in 1925.
Remaining Achille Varzi.
Varzis results in the AIACR European Championships:
1935: 8th
1936: 4th
1937: 27th
1938: -
1939: -
He did not win even one race counting for the European Championship.

The tittle of this thread is "The best Pre-Wars Driver", and that does not only includes the European Championship, Giacomo, as you can see by the stats provided here by Tazio, who do not only include the results from that championship, but also stats from the main GPs from that Era.

True.
Tazio included much more races than only the European championship races.
My mistake.

An interesting point: the system of the championship.

Caracciola is by far the only driver, who scored at least one win in every year.
