Daytona 24 hours!
The Daytona 24 hours is underway.
It's too close to call at the moment! Just passing the 12 hours mark Justin Wilson (Chip Ganassi BMW-Riley), Mike Rockefeller (Action Express Porsche Riley) and A.J. Allmendinger (Michael Schank Ford-Riley) are on the same lap.......
Diversity in chassis is alarmingly low, it's Riley singing all the way in the top five.

Montoya in the second Ganassi car retired from the lead in the early hours... car-breaker?

I noticed adverts for the transmission of the Daytona 500 when I watched the NFL conferentional finals last Sunday - as usual the week in Daytona begins at a leisurely pace with the 24 hours before gearing up for the race of thunder, with 125 miles qualification runs and truck races thrown in to keep the fans entertained until the big one.
In some ways the Daytona 24 hours doesn't get the recognition it deserves, as it presents some unique challenges - the mix of bankings and road circuit and, perhaps even more testing, endless traffic with a huge pack on a circuit less than half the length of Le Mans. There are so many chances of screwing up when all those slower cars with drivers of a very varied standards are lapped time and again.
But, having said that, it doesn't have an identity to match Le Mans- or even Sebring. Daytona isn't about the 24 hours race any more than Indianapolis is about F1. Their identities are intimately related to the 500 milers!

I tuned in a couple of days too late. LOL
What a close finish, there was nothing to choose between the Riley-Porsche of the debuting Action Express team and the Chip Ganassi Riley, powered by Bee Em Double You.
Results:
1. Terry Borcheller/Joao Barbosa/Ryan Dalziel (Riley-Porsche) 755 laps
2. Scott Pruett/Memo Rojas/Justin Wilson/Max Papis (Riley-BMW) 755 laps
3. Scott Tucker/Ryan Hunter-Reay/Lucas Luhr/Richard Westbrook (Riley-BMW) 751 laps
4. Tracy Krohn/Nic Jonsson/Ricardo Zonta/Colin Braun (Lola-Ford) 735 laps
5. John Pew/Oswaldo Negri Jr./Burt Frisselle/Mark Wilkins (Riley-Ford) 726 laps
6. Wayne Taylor/Max Angelelli/Pedro Lamy/Ricky Taylor (Dallara-Ford) 711 laps
