Formula 1
One of few Czechs to compete in Formula 1, Enge will perhaps feel he deserves another chance at Formula 1.
Having replaced the injured Luciano Burti at Prost in 2001, Tomas performed well, if unspectacularly in the three races he had. However before too long the Brazilian was back, and Enge was back on the sidelines.
Still unable to find an F1 seat in 2002 Enge resorted to Formula 3000, however his career was about to go on a rollercoaster ride.
Formula 3000, Part 1
The 2002 Formula 3000 championship was close. With two races still to go three men had a chance of taking the title; Bjorn Wirdheim, Giorgio Pantano and Tomas Enge. Enge lay second in the title race prior to the penultimate round in Hungary, but needed to beat Wirdheim to stand any chance of taking the title. All seemed to be going well for the Czech, he was winning and Wirdheim was languishing in the midfield. However after the race a scandal emerged, Enge had failed a drugs test and was banned from the Hungarian results and lost all his points from the previous races. Pantano inherited victory in Hungary and now it was a straight fight between the Italian and the Swede for F3000 glory.
However Enge had been handed a ban which would see him sit out of motorsport for a year. Enge looked on as Wirdheim took the title, a title which could have so easily been his.
Formula 3000, Part 2 and the
IRL
After his years ban through 2003, Enge returned to Formula 3000 in 2004. With a new team Enge wasn't expecting much, and he was right to do so, the team failed to win a race. In 2005 he's switched his attention to America, joining former rival Bjorn Wirdheim in the Indy Racing League series.
